ABOUT

Lori with sunflowers.jpg

Lori Smolin is a scientist, writer, and artist. She holds a B.S. from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. She currently lives in Connecticut where she taught nutritional science at the University of Connecticut for many years. She is the author of two college-level nutrition textbooks published by John Wiley & Sons.

Lori has been painting watercolors for about 30 years. She finds that working on a challenging painting is like reading a good book: you don't ever want it to end. She draws much of her subject matter from bicycle trips, many throughout the United Kingdom, where she lived for a year in England and a year in Scotland, as well as from rides  throughout New England, the rest of the US and other countries. Lori always tucks a camera in her cycling jersey so she can bring home new images to paint.

Lori is a member of the Art Guild Northeast where she serves on the Board of Directors. She is also a member of the Academic Artists Association, the Tolland County Art Association, and the Windham Regional Arts Council. She displays and sells her work in shows sponsored by these organizations and at other local art exhibits. Her watercolors have won awards in the Academic Artists Association’s National Exhibition of Traditional Realism, the Red Thread Network Annual Art Show, and the Tolland County Art Association’s Annual Open Art show.
